We'll see how their stunt to try and monetize their fans will affect this release! Seeing as how it well made for the general public, maybe not so much? Personally, I really wanted to love it.. but alas, I barely liked it.
MCU's influence has also reached tabletop adaptations and fantasy stories, it seems.. with similar kind of humorous wit and boorish characters that are seemingly as charming as they are dumb.
With overly predictable outcomes (like the "cemetery" scene), grand scale that ends up feeling small.. And when your "Paladin" takes the scene to fight undying-henchmen only to show the people in theaters his prowess, knowing full well the pointless outcome, only to run immediately after as if he didn't.. you can't be anything but disappointed and realize it's about nothing else but the tropey-spectacle. The character just HAD to have his moment on screen.
I may not be a D&D fan myself, but I do have general knowledge and expectations. Like a Mimic being a more serious treat and not a throwaway creature, or for characters inside a Gelatinous Cube to have more than a "tickling sensation" (taking acid damage, perhaps?). So, it seems to me that it barely cares about the source material and its rules. I'm reminded of the Last of Us adaptation, that shied away from having more infected in it.. you know, the reason for the story happening.
But to my surprise, what the movie does well is the emotional backstory and core of it all. Perfectly, even.. almost formulaic!
The Heist is also quite enjoyable for the most part. Some actors are well cast for their roles! Sadly, the story doesn't do anything memorable.. specially not with the setting.
At least the CGI was good, and for the average viewer, it might even offer an entertaining evening. Hopefully it will open the door for another attempt.. one that tries to do more than "just okay".
